(Host) Vermont’s most prominent deer hunter says he’s glad a proposal has been dropped to extend the muzzle-loader season into October.

Governor Peter Shumlin says he doesn’t think the plan would have helped boost the number of deer taken every fall.

He says he thinks it would have had the opposite effect, because bucks would be spooked by the gunfire in the woods earlier in the season.

(Shumlin) "I’m just telling you how I feel as governor and I feel passionately about hunting and I don’t want muzzle-loaders or anyone else shooting deer in October in Vermont."

(Host) The Fish and Wildlife Department proposed an October muzzle-loader season and held several hearings to get the public’s reaction.

Many of the hunters who turned out had the same reaction as Shumlin’s.

So the Fish and Wildlife Department has dropped the proposal.
