Legislators adopted a bill this year designed to encourage families to take in foster children by giving them a break on their property taxes.
But some are urging the governor to veto the bill because they worry exempting some from a portion of their property taxes could create pressure to do the same for others.
The issue is whether payments families receive for caring for foster children should be counted as income when calculating their education tax.
Under existing law, most Vermonters pay their property taxes as a percentage of their income.
The Legislature decided that the foster care payments shouldn’t be counted as part of that income.
The Vermont League of Cities and Towns says that could be the first of many exemptions in the future.
The league says the policy means that other tax payer’s bills will rise to cover the difference.
