Visiting Artists

Mary Stone is a whistle maker. But you might not know it just by looking at her work. Using different kinds of clay she hand-sculpts lifelike animals — tigers, frogs, bears, and birds. They range in size but the biggest need to be held with two hands.

It’s only when you pick them up and look closely that you notice the animals are hollow, and have holes placed strategically along their bellies or backs.

For this month’s installment in our ongoing series "Visiting Artists" VPR’s Jane Lindholm dropped in on Mary Stone at the sunny home workshop in East Montpelier where she shapes her creations.
