(Host) A merger that would have combined the schools in the Addison County towns of Whiting and Sudbury was rejected last night by voters in the town of Whiting.

The merger was approved by 14 votes in Sudbury, but in Whiting voters rejected the proposal by 21 votes.

The plan would have sent students in Kindergarten through second grade to the Whiting Elementary School and student in grades three through six would have attended the Sudbury Country School.

The schools already share Principal Mike O’Neil.

O’Neil says the merger would have cut costs and improved the quality of education. Currently, teachers at both schools teach three grade levels.

But the merger would have meant that one teaching position would be cut from each of the schools. 30 students are enrolled at both the Whiting and Sudbury schools.
