VSEA balks on pay cuts; may face layoffs

The union representing state workers is resisting calls by the Douglas administration for more pay cuts and is expected to face up to 320 layoffs instead.

The Vermont State Employees’ Association held a news conference Wednesday to say it would not accept Gov. Jim Douglas’ call for a 5 percent pay cut for workers making more than $30,000 a year.

Union leaders say they’ve already made concessions on pay and health care benefits equaling a 13 percent reduction in compensation for a worker making about $45,000 a year.

Administration Secretary Neale Lunderville says he’s disappointed in the union’s stance and that layoffs will have to start sooner than he had hoped.
