Vt. Communities Continue To Seek Energy Efficiencies

Cities and towns in Vermont continue to develop plans to reduce their energy costs.

In Montpelier, the city’s energy committee next Tuesday will host its first so-called "Energy Challenge Town Meeting."

The city says the goal is to help residents get ready for winter by giving them information about home energy audits and weatherization measures that can save them energy and money.

In its master plan, Montpelier set a series of sustainability goals. It wants to weatherize at least 1,000 homes and get at least 1,000 homes to switch to renewable energy by 2015.

In Brattleboro, a plan to convert the town’s street lights is moving forward. At a recent meeting, the town’s Director of Public Works discussed a town-wide plan to convert existing street lights to LED lights.

The goal, town officials say, is to achieve consistent lighting levels, improve safety and reduce electrical  use and expenses. One idea is to divide the town into three zones identified by their lighting needs.

And in Charlotte, the town’s energy committee has proposed consolidating the town’s heating and cooling systems.
