Senator Patrick Leahy and Congressman Peter Welch say they’re trying to extend a law that protects women from violence.
Leahy and Welch plan a news conference later Friday afternoon to talk about efforts in Washington to reauthorize what they call the "historic, lifesaving Violence Against Women Act."
Karen Tronsgard-Scott of the Vermont Network Against Domestic and Sexual Violence will join them to support their efforts.
The Senate has passed a bill that would reauthorize the law. But a very different version is pending in the House and there’s a political tussle in Washington about how to proceed.
Since the act was first passed in 1994, Vermont organizations have received federal supporting victims of domestic violence.
Last year, the groups received $3.1 million through the program.
