This time of year students are just beginning to settle into their new routines in the classroom. But for more than 2000 children in Vermont, they won’t set foot in a classroom this year, because they’re home-schooled. Amy Thornton-Kelly founded a home-schooling support network called the Pacem Learning Community in Montpelier. Retta Dunlap is the Executive Director of both the Vermont Home Education Network and Vermonters for a Better Education. They speak with VPR’s Jane Lindholm about the choice to educate their own children, why they’re doing so, and what challenges they face.
