Farmers and agriculture officials agree that Vermont’s Mexican farm workers are important to the livelihood of the state’s agricultural economy. But these workers live largely in the shadows, for fear of arrest and deportation. VPR’s Jane Lindholm speaks with Chris Urban, co-creator of an exhibit called The Golden Cage, documenting the lives of the workers, Cheryl Conner, a farmer and co-chair of the Addison County Farm Worker’s Coalition and Colonel James Baker, director of the Vermont State Police about the legal and cultural challenges facing the state’s immigrant laborers.
