All this summer we’ve been celebrating the 400th anniversary of Samuel de Champlain’s exploration of Lake Champlain and the legacy of French settlement in our culture. But there’s another quadricentennial event in our region – Henry Hudson’s exploration of present-day New York in September 1609.

Tom Lewis is a professor of English at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, New York, and the author (most recently) of The Hudson: A History. He recently spoke with VPR’s Jane Lindholm and says Hudson was an Englishman, but he explored on behalf of the Dutch, in search of riches and passage east.
