Vermont was the first state in the country to abolish slavery. It was written into our very first constitution. But that doesn’t mean that slavery never existed here. In her new book author Gretchen Holbrook Gerzina dives into northern New England’s hidden history of slavery through the lives of Abijah Prince and Lucy Terry. She spoke with VPR’s Jane Lindholm about that history, how the Princes ultimately won their freedom, and her own surprising connection to the story.
