According to projections, elderly Vermonters will make up nearly a quarter of the state’s population by the year 2030. With the region’s harsh winters and rural isolation in mind, senior advocates and some communities are planning for the challenges that will only multiply as the population ages.

Nancy Eldridge is the Executive Director of the non-profit Cathedral Square Corporation — one of the groups actively planning for the senior citizen explosion. Bob Crego is the Executive Director of an organization called Valley Cares that manages the West River Valley Senior Housing Complex in Townshend.  They spoke with VPR’s Jane Lindholm about options and ideas now available or in the works, from home-based services and home-sharing to senior housing and assisted living.
