One-hundred years ago today, the state of Vermont took ownership of its first state forest land in Plainfield.  The 642-acre forest was renamed for L.R. Jones, a botany professor at UVM.  In 1908, the legislature set aside the funds for that first forest land, and today the amount of state acquired forest land has increased to 300,000 acres.   Today, the state Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation is celebrating the centennial.

Steve Sinclair is the state director of Forests.  He spoke with VPR’s Steve Zind about the legacy of state forestry in Vermont.
