VT firms earn $722 million in defense contracts

Vermont companies have been awarded more than $722 million in defense contracts in fiscal 2008.

The state Department of Economic, Housing and Community Development says 209 businesses won contracts ranging from producing armaments and submarine parts to landscaping and waste removal, according to the Rutland Herald.

A total of 1,495 defense contracts were awarded in Vermont in fiscal 2008.

General Dynamics Armament and Technical Products in Burlington earned the most, with contracts totaling $523.4 million.

The plant manages and produces weapons systems including the Hydra-70 rocket, which has been used extensively in Iraq and Afghanistan.
