The Vermont National Guard is ready to help the Gulf Coast clean up in the aftermath of Hurricane Gustav.

Officials say a small advance team headed to Louisiana on Monday.

A larger response team is getting ready to go to Louisiana in case they are needed.

Vermont National Guard Adjutant General Michael Dubie says the guard is in the business of saving lives and helping neighbors.

He says the Vermont Guard’s plans will be adjusted as needed.

Three years ago, teams of Vermont guardsmen and women helped clean up in the aftermath of hurricane Katrina.

Gustav hit the coast of Louisiana on Monday. There’s no word yet on whether the Vermonters will be needed in Louisiana.
