The Vermont Health Department is urging the state’s health care providers, schools and others to watch for cases of swine influenza.

No cases of swine flu have been reported in Vermont, but there have been 20 confirmed cases of the disease in the United States, including eight in New York City.

All cases in the United States have been mild.

The Health Department is urging Vermonters to take simple precautions to avoid the spread of the flu. The precautions include: frequent hand washing, cover your mouth when you cough, stay home from school or work if you get sick and if you need medical attention call your health care provider.

Health Commissioner Dr. Wendy Davis says Vermont is ready in the event of a more widespread outbreak.
