Some of the families of Vermont service members killed overseas received special gold star license plates Tuesday that will honor their sacrifices.

Organizers expect almost 30 relatives of Vermonters killed in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere to receive the special plates during a ceremony at the National Guard’s Berlin Armory.

Since World War I the gold star has come to symbolize the loss of a service member.

Since September 11th about 30 service members with Vermont connections have died overseas, giving the state one of the highest per capita casualty rates in the country.

A number of states now issue gold star license plates, although the requirements to receive them vary.
