New test results show that Vermont eighth-graders scored above the national average in science, but just 43 percent of them are proficient or better in the topic.

The National Assessment of Education Progress results were released Thursday. Vermont had an overall score of 163 out of 300, compared to a national average score of 151.

The tests were given to 1,800 Vermont students last year.
