Vermont public school students are improving in reading, writing and math, according to new standardized test results.

The results released Wednesday show that scores for grades three to eight and grade 11 increased from last year, although many students remain below standard particularly in math.

The percentage of high school students who were proficient or better in reading rose to 72 percent. Writing also improved, with 43 percent proficient. But math scores remained low among high school students, at 35 percent performing at the standard or better, up from 30 percent in 2007.

For third to eighth graders, proficiency rose to 71 percent in reading, 65 percent in math and 55 percent in writing for fifth graders and 54 percent for eighth graders.
