Storm-weary cities and towns across Vermont continue to prepare for Hurricane Sandy Monday afternoon, as they closely monitor the path of the massive storm.

Current predictions show the storm veering to the west through central and western New York before turning abruptly north toward Canada. Total rainfall and flooding are less than originally forecast, and wind and power outages have emerged as a primary concern.

In Barre, the city’s preparations have included lowering water in the Dix Reservoir to provide storage capacity, as well as preparing chainsaws and other tree removal equipment. City officials say empty bags and sand are ready and available to the public and neighboring municipalities in central Vermont. Mayor Thom Lauzon says a watch system for local rivers will be activated as the storm hits the area.

Vermont Emergency Management is requiring that all communication go through local emergency management officers. The Department of Public Safety has begun issuing daily briefings, and the Red Cross is prepared to open shelters as needed.
