Watchdog group wants power increase halted

(Host) A nuclear watchdog group wants the state Supreme Court to halt a power increase at the Vermont Yankee nuclear plant.

The New England Coalition says the state Public Service Board committed serious procedural errors when it approved Yankee’s plans to produce more electricity at the 34-year-old reactor.

The coalition says the PSB gave final approval to the plan in March after hearing informally from experts. The coalition says that final order contradicts an earlier finding which said there was insufficient evidence to grant the request.

The coalition has asked the Supreme Court to stop the power increase while its appeal is heard.

Earlier, the Public Service Board rejected the coalition’s request to halt the project.

Vermont Yankee has said that it followed all the appropriate regulatory procedures.
