MONTPELIER, Vt. – Water service has been restored in downtown Montpelier and is expected back elsewhere in the city shortly.

That’s the word from Vermont Emergency Management, which says second- and third-shift state workers assigned to Montpelier should report to work normally.

State offices were closed and first-shift workers sent home Wednesday morning after two water main breaks in the city shut down water service to much of the nation’s smallest state capital, which has about 8,000 residents.

City officials issued the boil water order at midday Wednesday as crews worked to restore water service. Officials say the problems with the system could make it possible for bacteria to get into the system.
