Vermont’s lone representative to the United States House says he’s grateful for the support people gave him after his first term in Congress.

Democrat Peter Welch cruised to victory in Tuesday’s primary, easily defeating Craig Hill for the right to represent his party in the November election.

Vermont Republicans have not fielded a candidate to challenge Welch.

Welch says he’s proud of his accomplishments, but there are significant challenges facing Vermonters and the nation.

He cites the need for home heating assistance, increasing energy alternatives, creating economic opportunities for the middle class, and ending the war in Iraq.

Welch says the interests of working Vermonters will continue to guide his work.
