Welch, Leahy urged to leave Democratic Party

Congressman Peter Welch says he’ll vote no on a compromise with the White House that provides funding for the Iraq war without a timetable for withdrawing U.S. troops.

But some of the liberal Democrat’s most vocal critics, those on his left, say that’s not good enough.

Burlington lawyer James Leas joined other war critics and supporters of impeaching the president and vice president to issue a statement calling on Welch and Senator Patrick Leahy to leave the Democratic Party.

It accused the congressional Democrats of talking peace but voting for war. And it said Welch and Leahy should leave the Democratic Party much the way former U.S. Senator James Jeffords left the Republican Party in 2001.
