Welch: President Needs Congressional Approval For Libya Campaign

(Host) Congressman Peter Welch says the Obama administration needs congressional authority to continue the military campaign in Libya.

(Welch) "The president, I think is overdue, in coming before Congress under the war powers act to explain exactly what his intentions are and also to get approval."

(Host) Welch says the allied bombing of Libya has succeeded in preventing what he described as a humanitarian crisis.

But Welch says he’s reluctant for the American military to get involved in arming the rebels who are battling Colonel Moammar Gaddhafi.

(Welch) "I’d be supremely cautious about taking a step like that. We don’t know who they are. The last time America armed rebels it ended up being the Taliban in Afghanistan."

(Host) Welch says he agrees with the political goal of ousting Gaddhafi. But he says the U-S needs to be careful in its approach.
