Welch says government should seek lower drug prices

Congressman Peter Welch says the federal government can save seniors and taxpayers money by negotiating with pharmaceutical companies on prescription drug prices for seniors in Medicare Part D.

Welch offered an amendment Thursday that he says would allow the secretary of Health and Human Services to drastically reduce the price of prescription drugs for seniors with the insurance plan.

Welch says it’s a common sense way to use the government’s purchasing power to save seniors and taxpayers money on prescription drugs.

His office says the Department of Veterans Affairs has found significant discounts by negotiating directly with drug companies on behalf of its beneficiaries.
