Welch urges change in relationship with government

State Senator Peter Welch says he’s running for Congress to change peoples’ relationship to government.

The Democrat from Hartland says the Bush administration has disregarded the needs of ordinary Americans in virtually all of the decisions made during the past five years.

Welch says the challenge of this fall’s campaign for the U.S. House is to show there is another choice.

Welch told The Associated Press in an interview that he wants to show, in his own words, that “we’re all in it together.”

The 59-year-old Welch was first elected to the state Senate in 1980. He served for eight years and then returned to the Senate in 2001.

He says he’s shown he can work with both Democrats and Republicans.
