(Host) Democratic congressional candidate Peter Welch says he would support a resolution in Congress calling for Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld to resign or be fired.

Welch blames Rumsfeld for faulty intelligence leading up to the Iraq war and abuse of detainees at the Abu Graib prison.

(Welch) “He has been a failure from start to finish and the principle of accountability needs to be restored. Frankly I think he’s lost the confidence of the military as well as of our allies.”

(Host) Responding to the resolution, Republican congressional candidate Martha Rainville, who is currently adjutant general of the Vermont National Guard, said “now is not the time for political grandstanding or fingerpointing.”

She says Congress and the administration need to work together on a plan to bring the troops home.

Republican congressional candidate Mark Shepard says he’d have to think about whether Rumsfeld should go.
