The widow of former U.S. Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart has died in Vermont. Mary Ann Bertles Stewart was 93.

Her daughter, Harriet Stewart Virkstis, says she died Monday in Brattleboro of pneumonia.

Stewart’s husband was appointed to the court in 1958 and retired in 1981. He died in 1985.

Mary Ann Stewart was born in Grand Rapids, Mich., and attended Vermont’s Bennington College. A Supreme Court biography says she was a longtime resident of Washington, D.C., where she was active in philanthropic endeavors and humanitarian causes. She was an ambassador to UNICEF and a member of the boards of the National Osteoporosis Foundation and the Jefferson Awards for Public Service.

Stewart moved to Vermont four years ago to be near family. A private burial will be held at Arlington National Cemetery.
