(Host) A month after a Vermont sheriff committed suicide, her husband has succeeded her.

Sgt. Ray Allen, a 20-year-veteran of the Grand Isle Sheriff’s Department, was sworn in as sheriff Wednesday, succeeding his late wife, Sheriff Connie Allen, who took her own life July 7th.

In a bittersweet ceremony at the county courthouse in North Hero, Allen, who is 46,  took the oath from a judge and vowed to keep up the good work done by his late wife in her nine years on the job.

Governor Peter Shumlin, who appointed Allen to fill the spot, attended the ceremony along with a room full of relatives, friends and law enforcement officers from several Vermont counties.
