The man charged with going on a shooting rampage in Essex in 2006, shooting two teachers at an elementary school in addition to two others, has been ruled competent to stand trial.

Christopher Williams, 29, is charged in an Aug. 24, 2006 rampage in Essex that police say began when Williams – upset about breaking up with his girlfriend – gunned down her mother and then shot two teachers and a man before trying to take his own life.

Last week, a psychiatrist hired by the state testified that Williams was faking psychosis to try to avoid going to trial, which is set to begin July 7. A defense psychiatrist testified that Williams’ mental state would make a trial difficult.

In a five-page decision handed down yesterday, Judge Geoffrey Crawford found that Williams has the capacity to understand the trial proceedings and cooperate with his lawyers.
