Williamstown under boil-water order

Williamstown officials have asked residents to boil their drinking water, after elevated coliform levels were found in two successive samples taken from the municipal water system.

Town Manager Ed Magee says the state ordered the town to issue a boil water notice on Thursday, after tests of a water sample taken last Monday revealed elevated levels of coliform bacteria.

It was the second time this month that tests on the water system turned up elevated levels of the bacteria.

Chlorine has been added to the water, and another test is set for Monday. Results are expected by mid-week, and if the problem is cleared up, the boil-water order will be lifted.
