With Shared Shoreline, Upper Valley Towns Discuss Joint Governance

(Host) The three Upper Valley towns of Fairlee, West Fairlee, and Thetford all border Lake Fairlee, but there is no joint structure in place for monitoring and governing the shoreline.

At a public meeting Thursday night residents from the three towns will face common issues including environmental concerns about storm water run-off pollution and invasive milfoil.

Fairlee Select Board Chair Jay Barrett says the most worrisome problem is an aging dam that’s owned by an out-of-state couple. If it fails, he says, pricey shoreline property could end up on mud flats.

(Barrett) "That dam alone could be a frightfully expensive thing and so tonight we will be finding out what our options are and then hopefully forming a group out of that to bring some body, some governing body together, so that all three towns can share in the governing of this lake."

(Host) A representative from the Vermont League of Cities and Towns will offer advice at the meeting, which begins at 7:00 p.m. at the Fairlee Town Hall.
