A 20-year-old Essex woman is facing charges she tried to smuggle drugs into the Northern State Correctional Facility in Newport.

Police say Melissa Weston was issued a citation on Saturday for an incident alleged to have happened on June 30.

Correctional officers say they discovered two small plastic packages that had been smuggled into the facility during visiting hours after they saw Weston try to hand the packages to an inmate.

The inmate then put the items in his mouth and ran from the officers. One of the packages was later recovered and found to contain the drug Buprenorphine.

Weston is facing charges of possession of narcotic drugs and transporting narcotic drugs into a place of detention.

She’s due in court in January.
